Plot

Larry Crowne, a Navy Veteran, is thrown out of his job, owing to his lack of college education. Determined to not let the circumstances get the better of him, he joins a community college. He is attracted to Mercedes Tainot, who conducts the speech classes. However, Mercedes, aka ‘Mercy’ has issues of her own. Will Larry accept things as they are, or will he make the change?

Star Performances

This film is Tom Hanks all the way. From writing the script to essaying the titular role, Tom Hanks has delivered a sweet entertainer for the audiences.

Alongside Julia Roberts, the supporting cast has been outstanding. Special mention to Gugu Mbatha Raw and Ian Gomez, for their respective roles of Talia and Frank.

Analysis

A romantic comedy involving a middle-aged couple? That is practically every tenth film ever made by Hollywood. However, what makes ‘Larry Crowne’ different from the rest, is the treatment of the story, and of course, TOM HANKS!

‘Larry Crowne’ is no ‘ Forrest Gump Click to look into! >> Read More... ,’ but Tom Hanks does invoke the sweetness of simplicity, as popularized by the 1994 classic. Our protagonist is no swashbuckling, trigger-happy fugitive. He is not a suave spy either! He is just a simple guy, who wants the world to be a better place.

Not many expected Bryan Cranston to play a role like Dean Tainot. Yet, in his brief appearance, he makes everybody squirm with his twisted approach to life. Other members of the supporting cast, including Gugu Mbatha Raw as the cheeky classmate Talia, Frank as a local diner who helps Larry out, and even Pam Grier as Frances, add to the brilliance of this film. Even Julia Roberts, as the cynical teacher Mercedes, leaves a lasting impression.

They say the toughest thing in the world is to be simple. However, as director, Tom Hanks has made a sweet, simple entertainer, that will leave every viewer with a smile on their faces. The plot is not something out of the blue, but the way Tom Hanks executed it, is something to remember.
