Plot: The movie happens in the present days of Great Britain. As a lonely ranger, Harry Brown meanders his way via a world surrounded by riots.The world around him is infested with juvenile delinquents. Harry is a gentleman who has always abided by the law. Leonard is his only companion during his old days. Ageing process and loneliness brought Harry close to Leonard. When violence takes a toll on the life of his friend Leonard, Harry breaks down.Harry makes out that he has to take charge of things and wipe out the rampant crime. For quite a long time, Harry has been concealing the brutal force in him as a soldier. But, the pain caused by the lonely man’s friend prods him to involve in violence again.
The movie opens with Harry as a very old man left in loneliness. His only partner in life, his wife, is facing death on its face. He gently strokes her on her cheeks, but the end is very near. After her demise, all that is left for him is his soft-spoken neighbor Leonard. Juvenile delinquents and thugs rule the roost in the vicinity. The violence takes a toll on Leonard’s mental peace and his life also. At this juncture, Harry loses control and resorts to extreme violence that defies underlying logic in the story. But scenes before he turns violent and those which show a subdued Harry are worth watching.
Actress Emily Mortimer does the role of a police sleuth. She has deep-rooted concern for fellow beings but is intelligent at the same time. She senses the vendetta in Harry. In the climax, Harry is about to retaliate when violence becomes excessive. But Emily tries to stop him saying that the place is not Northern Ireland where he served in Royal Navy. Harry agrees but adds to her astonishment that there was a cause in the fight the soldiers put up. Here, in the riot, it is missing, stresses Harry.
Verdict: The portrait of the soldier as an old man touches the heart of audiences.
