CAST & CREW
Plot: This movie is a bio picture on James Brown, who was an American singer and a dancer. He founded the ‘funk music’ and was also referred to as ‘the godfather of soul.’ James Brown’s role is played by Chadwick Boseman.
Director Tate Taylor has studied Brown’s videos keenly. Boseman was able to replicate exactly all the signature movements of Brown. Boseman’s performance is highly appreciable as he took so much of care in details such as lip-sync, etc. It was like Brown’s soul had got into Boseman’s body. It is also said that Boseman was created like Brown.
This movie can be considered more like a documentary. Most of the events from Brown’s timeline like his childhood, rising to fame has been covered. But few political happenings in Brown’s life was not covered much. Disputes between Brown and his band was repetitive, which adds extra time to the already lengthy movie duration. The movie has been sketched more like a brief outline rather than a character sketch.
The screenplay was shuttling from one event to another, which is considered as a drawback. Everyone will expect for one straight show rather than a complicated one. Many flashbacks often pop on the screen, and we have to catch it. His emotional sides have been covered a lot. Few parts of the movie did not merge well with the next upcoming scenes, but they did not disappoint us.
This movie will be confusing for the people who are not aware of Brown’s life events. The Screenplay could have been better.
Verdict: one good attempt and a worthy time pass for Brown’s fans. Totally a toe- tapping time!
