Plot

The plot of this film revolves around two teenage friends who try to sneak into an illegal rave party. The story was set in 1994 in Scotland. Johnno and Spanner are best friends. They have no control over their lives and risks everything to attend that party. They take their life as dull and hope to have the best night of their lives. The film goes through the friends’ lives in a small Scottish town. They decide to have fun for one last night before they part ways. They sneak in the illegal rave that change their lives utterly after that. The boys share an unforgettable night as they enter an underworld of anarchy, freedom, and collision with the law. The movie also shows some snippets of Johnno and Spanner’s individual lives. Spanner comes from a home without parental guidance and a brutish older brother. He grows up without any proper supervision and hence turns up unruly. Johnno's mother is also not quite fond of him. Johnno’s family decides to move to a quieter suburb. The boys realize they have to part ways soon. Thus, they steal money and go to a rave to enjoy their last moment together. They risk getting busted by cops. They use drugs to get away from reality, into a world of no rule and authority and listen to their beats-driven techno music. Their friendship goes through a lot of tests throughout the movie. But they enjoy their moments of being teenagers to the fullest. The film is quite funny sometimes.

Star performance

The leading stars, Ortega and Macdonald have a great chemistry between them. Their acting is on point. It makes the audiences believe that they are best friends in real life. Their acting gives momentum to the film. The rest of the cast members are outstanding in their characters too. The director did an excellent job in executing this film. The cinematography and editing are perfect. The background score is beautiful and suitable for the film.

Analysis

It is commendable of the director to portray the reality of the society with so much details. The film shows the culture of rave parties in the UK and the banning of those via the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act of 1994. The director and scriptwriter don't seem to hold back on any details and portray the police atrocities efficiently. It seems to mock the absurdity of the law by quoting it word-for-word. It proves to be an eye-opener for many people. The leads try to as teenagers properly, exploring their rebellious sides. They try to lose themselves in the music to escape the brutal reality. They explore illegal usage of drugs, knowing it would end them up in trouble. However, the risk makes it more enjoyable for them. The director portrayed a story of a fragile friendship with frequent funny scenes and mockery. That makes it a pleasant ride.

What's there?

  • The fantastic acting of Ortega and Macdonald
  • Brian Welsh’s excellent direction
  • Perfect screenwriting
  • Outstanding BGM and cinematography

What's not there?

  • A few errors that should be avoided

Verdict

Beats seems like a simple film about friendships but it gives a message to the society. It mocks the UK laws and forcible enforcement. It reminds the audiences of recent news footages. Johnno and Spanner releases themselves from the shackles of authority and responsibility. This is what inspires the audience. The ups and downs in their friendships provide melancholy to the scenes and make the audience emotional. It is a must-watch film for all the drama and comic genre lovers. It will also be loved by people who reminisces their long-gone rebellious teenage and would love to relive them. Overall, it is a perfectly executed film.
