Plot
Dr. Carl Jung is visited by a hysterical Russian, Sabina Spielrein. Carl Jung has a special bond with acclaimed psychiatrist Dr. Sigmund Freud, who is more than impressed with the former. As he tends to Sabina, he develops an unlikely relationship with her. Will this affect the mutual bond between Dr. Freud and Dr. Jung as well?
Star Performances
This film may not be liked by many, but the writer, as well as the director, deserve praise for their courage to delve into a bold subject like this.
Keira Knightley is great as the inquisitive, yet borderline hysterical Sabina. While Michael Fassbender is great as usual, the real star of this film is Viggo Mortensen, who portrayed Dr. Sigmund Freud and his eccentricity rather impressively.
Analysis
Some films are straightaway impressive. Some films deceive by either their appearance or by the wonders they have hidden beneath an okayish trailer. Then come films that force us to think, and simply cannot be restricted to black and white.
‘A Dangerous Method’ is one such movie. This film explores more than just the intellect possessed by some of the brightest minds in the world. This film is a whirlwind journey of emotions, from curiosity to something more than just sensuality.
This film is not everybody’s cup of tea. For those, who are a bit idealistic in choosing movies, they should better stay away. For those, who watch films only for their unusual pleasures, this film is also not an ideal choice. However, for those, who believe in the unexpected, this is one film.
The film explores the bond between Dr. Freud and Dr. Jung in a rather novel way. Viggo as Dr. Freud is rather understated. Despite the limited screen space, he often overwhelms the main protagonist, played by Michael Fassbender. While Keira Knightley is great, her character development could have been better.
However, the film is far from being a certified masterpiece. Despite a slick runtime, the editing is a bit clunky. The direction is not that impressive in comparison to the visuals. While David Cronenberg has not done a bad job at it, the script deserved better treatment.Â

‘A Dangerous Method’ is a bold attempt at uniquely showing history. The intellect, as well as the performances in this film, is brilliant, but the overall experience does not merit the potential of the script. You can watch this for impressive performances and good visuals. Â
