Pandit Mela Ram is a noted poet, novelist, and journalist. He was the son of Pandit Bhagat Ram and grandson of Pandit Jai Das and was given the title of Raj-Kavi by the government of Punjab and became famous as Mela Ram Vafaa. In the Punjab village of Dipoke, in the Sialkot district, he was born on January 26th 1895. When he was younger, he used to pasture cattle in his hamlet.
Mela Ram taught Persian and Urdu at the National College in Lahore in addition to serving as the editor of multiple newspapers. In addition, he received a two-year term for penning the defiant poem “Aye Farangi”. In addition to his two collections of poetry, “Soz-e-Watan” and Sang-e-Mil”, one of his important works is the novel “Chand Ka Safar.” Sant Ram, his older brother was also a poet who wrote under the pen name “Shauq”. 2011 saw the publication of ‘’Mela Ram Vafa:Hayat-o-Khidmat” by T.R. Raina from the Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu (India). He also composed music for music pictures, including Agni (1945) and Pagli (1943).
Mela Wafa began composing poetry at the age of seventeen under the guidance of Pandit Raj Narayan Arman Dehlvi, after getting married at the age of twelve. Arman, a student of Dagh Dehlvi, edited the well-known Urdu magazine “Makhzan” in addition to Lala Lajpat Rai’s Urdu daily ‘Vande Mataram.” In addition, he contributed a column called “Jang Ka Rang” to the daily “Veer Bharat’ and worked for Madan Mohan Malviya’s publications. In Jalandhar, Punjab, on September 19, 1980, he passed away.
