Ajantha Ranasinghe, born Senanayake Mudianselage Ranasinghe Arachchilage Ajantha Sarath Kumara Ranasinghe in Thalammahara, Kurunegala, Ceylon, on 30th May 1940, was a journalist, poet, novelist, and lyricist. His father was a doctor, and his mother was a teacher cum postmaster. Ajantha Ranasinghe had an elder sister, two younger brothers, and two younger sisters. He completed his schooling at the Pannala Government School. He was graduated from St. John's College, Nugegoda. Ajantha was married to Sarojini Weeratunge. Sarojini’s mother was a famous singer, Kokiladevi Weeratunga. Ajantha and Sarojini had two children, Saranga Ranasinghe and Devalochana Ranasinghe.
Asoka Pieris, a famous dramatist, was his uncle. So, he started showcasing his talent at a very young age with the help of his uncle. His songs about Buddhism were aired on Radio Ceylon’s program Lama Mandapaya. In 1964, he released his first poetry collection, Thivanka Rekha.
Ajantha started his career as a lyricist in 1976 with the film, Wasana. He wrote more than 300 songs for Sri Lankan cinema industry. His last film as a lyricist, Aathma Warusha, was released in 2015. Besides working in cinema industry, he also contributed to the music industry, and wrote more than 400 songs for private albums for various singers.
He was an Editor at Lake House for twenty-five years. He also worked for Dinamina, Janatha, and Nawayugaya. Ajantha had also worked as a singer for Radio Ceylon.
He was honoured with various awards, including Sarasaviya Awards, OCIC Awards, State Literary Awards, Raigam Awards, Sumathi Awards, and an award at the Kumaratunga Munidasa ceremony.
In February 2016, he met with an accident near his house. He was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. After 3 days, he died on 27th February 2016.
