Malkit Singh Boparai is a well-known England-based Punjabi singer and songwriter. He was born on 13 September 1962 in Hussainpur and raised in Nakodar. He completed his graduation in music from Jalandhar’s Khalsa College and Guru Nanak University in Amritsar. Later, in 1984, he moved to Birmingham. The unofficial “King of Bhangra” excels in Bhangra and Indi-Pop genre and somehow always represents his culture and tradition in his songs, be it in music, beats, or lyrics. He has represented Punjabi folk and Indian culture in over 36 countries. Some of his celebrated works are “Gur Nalo Ishq Mitha,” “Tootak Tootak Tootiyan,” “Kurri Garam Jayee,” “Dekh Li Vilyait;” “Chal Huna,” and “Jind Mahi,” which features in the famed soundtrack “Bend it Like Beckham.” Besides, “Tootak Tootak Tootiyan” is also the fastest selling and most successful bhangra song. Malkit Singh has achieved a lot of triumphs and has impressed the world with his talent.

He is the First Indian and Asian singer to be honored with the MBE, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Apart from these, he was given the Recognition of the City of Los Angeles for his service to the Indian Community in 1997. He has been mentioned in the 2000 Guinness Book of World Records for being the Biggest Selling Bhangra artist of all time. He was presented with the 27th Convocation Gold Medal Award Doctorate by Guru Nanak Dev University in 2001. He had also performed at UCLA’s Bruin Bhangra in 2006.
