Gurcharan Singh Pohli was born on 24 June 1942. Pohli is an Indian singer and actor who has worked in Punjabi and Hindi films. Pohli was born in Chaki Village No. 51, Pakpattan Tehsil, Montgomery District (now Pakpattan District), Punjab, British India. He is known for his Punjabi duets with his wife, singer Promila Pammi. They were one of the most famous couples in Punjab in the 1970s and 80s and were well-known together as Pohli-Pammi. He learned music from Ustad Jaswant Bhanwra.
He was active in the Punjabi entertainment industry from the 1960s to the late 1980s. As an actor, he is known for the role of 'Ghukka' in 'Balbeero Bhabi' which released in the early 80s. Pohli was always interested in working in films. Director Boota Singh Shaad gave him his first opportunity as a playback singer in his Punjabi film 'Kulli Yaar Di' in the late 60s. Pohli went to Bombay to try his luck in film. He got his acting break in the 1974 Hindi film Kora Badan, also directed by Boota Singh Shaad.
After that, he worked in many Hindi films like 'Chattan Singh 'Paap Aur Punya' and 'Sharafat Chhod Di Maine.' He returned to Punjab and also worked in some Punjabi films. He is known for his role as the villain 'Ghukkar' in the Punjabi film 'Balbeero Bhabi' in the early 80s. After that, he worked in some other Punjabi films like 'Yaari Jatt Di' (1984), 'Patola' (1987), and 'Jatt Soormay' (1988). Due to Partition, his family moved to Kot Karor Kalani village near Talwandi Bhait in Firozpur district of East Punjab, India. Pohli married his stage partner and singer Promila Pammi.
