Bhai Samund Singh is a legendary Sikh musician born in the 1900 AD in Mulla Hamza village of Montgomery District, currently present in Pakistan. that was performed every day at the Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sri Nankana Sahib in the district of Sheikhupura in Lahore division. One manager of the shrine who were called ‘Mahants’ discovered young Samund Singh’s extraordinary talent and offered him to become a “Huzoori Kirtania” at the top Sikh shrines. As a child, he won many prizes and distinctions at several musical concerts. He is popularly known as 'Kaka Samund Singh' and was highly demanded at Sikh congregations.
From 1912 to August 1947, he holds a position of ‘Hazoori Ragi’ and after 1935 he became the leading ‘Hazoori Raagi,’ in the Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sri Nankana Sahib. His party called Jatha was known to be the best in context of their art with perfect presentation of Gurbani Kirtan. His voice was unique and melodious which gave a deep understanding of Gurbani. It followed the correct interpretation of the ragas; the singing style was attractive with great human qualities. He sings in classical mold while balancing the emotional music effect with the spiritual appeal by repeating the phrases with variations. He has lived for over sixty years in the world of Gurbani Kirtan. For many years, he performed kirtan at the esteemed Gurdwara Janamasthan, Sri Nankana Sahib, which is where the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev is.
His life was simple as of a true devotee. He firmly believed that, the sacred music that is sung by a 'Ragi' must flow from a heart and have a pure practical, simple life with restraint and constant meditation. He will be remembered for a long time for his unrivaled qualities as a scholar of Gurbani Sangeet and a musician. His kirtans were broadcast for 36 years from All India Radio, Lahore and later, broadcasted from Jalandhar with broad listening command. His kirtans had such influence that passers-by used to stop in the streets to listen to it irrespective of what their faith was. National Programme of Music by All India Radio invited him to perform kirtan, which was the highest recognition of his art. He received the State Award in 1971 from the Punjab Government. He passed away s few months later on 5th January, 1972 at Ludhiana. He has a son named Bhai Harbhajan Singh.
