Nityananda Palit, known as Nitai Palit, was born on March 8, 1923, in Cuttack, to Nagendranath Palit and Sarojini Devi. He was a playwright, director, and actor. He did his schooling at Ravenshaw Collegiate School. He was the joint director with Manoranjan Das for the movie Kedar-Gauri. It featured Gour Ghosh and Bina Kumari, to whom he got married to. He directed the movie Malajahna, released in 1965, which won the President's Award from Indira Gandhi. This film is also the first Oriya film to be awarded as the 'Silver Lotus.' He had set up his own production house named Creative Movies Productions in 1980. He produced two movies 'Anurag' and 'Raghu-Arakhita' under his production house. He died on July 26, 1990, in Cuttack, at the age of sixty-seven. In his memory, the 'Nitai Palit Award' is given to Oria film personalities for their contribution to Oriya cinema.Â
