Asim Basu was a director, actor, writer, painter, and theatre artist from Orissa. He made an appreciable contribution to the Odia film industry. He was from Kakhada village, Balasore district, Orissa.

He initially started his career as a director and has directed over 200 plays. His first play was Duiti Surya Dagdha Phula Ku Nei. He also worked as a designer for Oriya books covers and movies posters. Besides being a director, he worked as a scenic designer in over 500 plays. He also acted in Chha Mana Atha Guntha. Asim Basu established a theatre group in Orissa known as Rupakar. Some of his notable works include- Maa Mate Shakti De (1990), Indradhanura Chhai (1993), Dadagiri (1993), Hemanter Pakhi (2001), and And Once Again (2010).
Asim Basu was honored with several awards for his distinguished contribution to the theatre industry. In 1998, he was honored with the State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Parampara Samman award in 2012.
On 1st February 2017, the renowned artist Asim Basu took his last breath at Capital Hospital in Orissa due to a lung infection.Â
