After that, he moved to Orissa and started acting. Throughout his lifetime, Hemanta Das had acted in more than 50 films. Hemanta Das has been honored with various awards, including ‘The Odisha State Film Award’; ‘The Guru Kelucharan Award’; the Jayde Award, and many more. He died in Cuttack, Orissa, on 27 April 2010 because of a prolonged disease.
