Ashleigh Monique Murray was born in Kansas City, Missouri on January 18, 1988. She is a well-known American singer and actress. Murray went to Oakland, California, in the fifth grade to live with her aunt for two years, during which time she learned piano, jazz, and hip-hop. She came to New York City after graduating from high school in Kansas City, Missouri, to study at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, where she graduated in 2009. Previously, while studying at NYCDA, she appeared in an off-Broadway production of "Child of the Movement," based on a true story about Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old girl from Montgomery who preceded Rosa Parks' involvement with the NAACP. She also starred in a Coke commercial alongside Diggy Simmons during the 2013 BET Awards, as well as Lady Gaga's MTV VMA 2013 promo video. Murray featured in two episodes of TV Land's Younger and starred in the Netflix Original Movie "Deidra & Laney Rob a Train" in 2017. On January 23, 2017, the film made its global debut at the Sundance Film Festival. Netflix premiered it on March 17, 2017. On the CW television series Riverdale, she played Josie McCoy, the lead singer of Josie and the Pussycats.
Murray was hired as Josie McCoy, "a stunning, snobby, and ambitious teenager who is the lead singer for the successful band Josie and the Pussycats," as a series regular in The CW's teen drama Riverdale in 2016. Murray joined the program in 2017 and remained until 2019. Murray confirmed in February 2019 that she would reprise her role as Josie McCoy as part of the main cast of the Riverdale spin-off pilot, Katy Keene. Katy Keene was ordered to series by The CW in May 2019. Murray was revealed to have joined the cast of MGM's musical Valley Girl, a remake of the 1983 film, as Loryn in 2017.
