Kashyap was born on 16th August 1927 in Semra, a small village in Sasaram in Bihar. He was born to Rai Bahadur Janaki, who was the DSP under the then British Government, and Ramasakhi Devi. Kashyap completed his schooling at Munger Town School of Bihar. He got his Master's degree from Patna University in 1950. He later joined as a professor in Hindi at B.N. College under the Patna University and later at a college in Arrah from where he retired.

Kashyap started as a writer by publishing his first monthly journal Kishor in Patna in 1942. He shot to fame with his Bhojpuri play Loha Singh which was later turned into a movie where Kashyap himself played the lead. Some of his other works include Tasalva Tor ki Mor, Neelkanth Nirala, Prabhat Varnan (Poem), and Machhari (Short Story). In 1992, Kashyap was honoured with the Padma Shri. He breathed his last breath on October 12th, 1992 due to diabetes.
