Birha Dangal is a reality show in the Bhojpuri language that airs on the channel, Mahuaa TV. Mahuaa TV was owned by the Mahuaa network and was a first of its kind Bhojpuri channel with its array of dance shows, music shows, movies, documentaries, soaps etc. However, due to recurring loss, the channel has been shut down in the year 2017. Birha Dangal has had two successful seasons till date. The first season was launched in the year 2015. The second season was launched in the year 2016.

The show had a successful run for six months and came to an end in September. The second season had a total of 54 episodes, the last episode being the grand finale. Birha Dangal is a music based show in the reality genre. As the name of the show suggests, it is a “Dangal," which means a fight or a contest. “Biraha” is a folk song genre of the Bhojpuri region, which includes parts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and western Bihar. It is an entertainment genre of the common people.

It is usually narrative songs performed by a lead singer, male or female, accompanied by musicians with basic musical instruments like tabla, dhol, flute, harmonium, etc., and a small chorus group. Each of these narrative songs is about forty minutes long. Birha Dangal is a reality competition between various such Biraha artists who compete against each other to win the show. All these contestants come from various outskirts, villages and cities of the state of Uttar Pradesh. These Birha artists compose their own songs based on the genre provided to them.

The format of the second season of the show is such that the show has around 20 contestants. These contestants are divided into two groups or gharanas. Each of these gharanas is headed by one judge. The Vidrohi Gharana is lead by judge Surendra Yadav, and the Baaghi Gharana is lead by judge Parshuram Yadav. There is a third judge, Pyarelal Kavi, who provides a neutral judgment on the performance and also gives the contestants different genres to base their performances on like romantic, comedy, satire, etc.

All these performances are evaluated through rounds of solo performances and face-offs. Through a process of elimination, one of these contestants became the winner.
