Glimpses of Uttar Pradesh is a TV serial which is telecasted on Doordarshan, and is based on a book by R. S. Ahra and Latika Singh, of the same name. This program informs us about the rich culture and history of the most populous state of our country. It's culture is highly embedded in Hindi and Urdu music, cinema, literature, fine arts and drama.
Lucknow is the capital of the state and is home to several magnificent monuments such as Chhota Imambara and Bara Imambara. The Oudh period’s British residential quarters have been damaged, but they are being restored. Uttar Pradesh attracts a huge number of tourists, both Indians and foreigners. Last year it reported, around seventy-one million tourists had come to visit the state, making it one of the top tourist destinations in the country.
Majority of the tourists visit only two places: The Hindu Pilgrimage Circuit and The Agra Circuit. Agra is home to three world heritage sites: Agra Fort, the nearby Fatehpur Sikri and the wold famous Taj Mahal. Varanasi is also a popular tourist destination, mostly visited by religious pilgrims. It is considered to be the oldest city in the world. It has a rich Hindu heritage and millions of people from around the world come to bathe in the sacred river Ganges.
Mathura is another sought after city, which many people come to visit to be part of the festival of colours. The Magh Mela festival is organised on the banks of Ganges in Allahabad. Every twelfth year, the event is organised on a larger scale where hundreds of millions of Hindu pilgrims come to bathe in the river Ganges. It is called the Kumbh Mela. It is a huge gathering of human bodies at one single place at one single time.
Buduan is another city with a rich culture and historical importance. Sanarth and Kushinagar are two other significant towns which are mostly visited by Buddhist tourists. It is supposedly known that, after attaining enlightenment, Lord Buddha gave his first sermon in the city of Sanarth. He later died in Kushinagar. Then there is also the Lion Capital Of Ashoka and Pillars of Ashoka. Uttar Pradesh has always been the Centre of Governance. It has always maintained its importance since time immemorial.
