The 20th National Film Awards were distributed in the year 1972 to recognise excellent works in the field of cinema in that year. With the 20th National Film Awards, a new award category was introduced to include feature films in the Manipuri language. The new criteria included the award named as President’s Silver Medal for Best Feature Film in the language Manipuri.
The jury included six different members that were formed along with the film sectors of India set in the cities of Bombay, Calcutta, and Chennai along with the central committee if the country which was headed by Romesh Thapar for this year. Jury members were selected for different categories like central, short films, Bombay, Calcutta, Chennai as well as for regional. The division of awards was on the basis of feature films and non-feature films. The lifetime achievement award for this year also known as the Dadasaheb Phalke Award was given to Pankaj Mullick Pankaj Kumar Mullick, who was a pioneer of film mu >> Read More... , a music director. Awards were given to films even at the regional level. For this year, a Malayalam film Swayamvaram was awarded the President’s Award for All India Best Feature Film.
There are awards for a number of categories apart from the best feature film like for direction, cinematography, screenplay, actor, actress, child artist, playback singer both male and female as well as music direction. The Best direction was won by Malayalam film Swayamvaram which also received the award for cinematography in black and white whereas Maya Darpan in Hindi received cinematography for colour. Hindi film Koshish won the best screenplay and actor. Swayamvaram also took the award for the best actress.
Ranur Pratham Bhag in Bengali received the award for the best child artist. Parichay in Hindi and Achanum Bappayum in Malayalam won the awards for best female and male playback singers. Awards were also given to the best films in the regional level including ones in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Manipuri, Marathi, as well as Telugu. Under the category of non-feature films, awards were given for Documentaries, films on social documentation, promotional films as well as animation films. However, this 20th National Film Award season did not view awards being given to a number of categories like for story writer, children’s film, experimental, children’s film, and also feature films in Punjabi, Oriya or English.
