It mainly broadcast Hindi programs and ran its operations from Mumbai. The channel went on air on 1st November 2004. It is under the umbrella of the Star TV network which operates in Asia. It is a part of News Corporation’s ventures. The channel gets distributed to the audiences worldwide via the Fox International Channels. When it had its launch, Star One became an overnight success. It consisted of a fresh slew of programming. It topped the ratings for many months.
It maintained the top spot while facing stiff competition from some of India’s other leading Hindi entertainment channels. These included the likes of Sony TV, Star Plus, Colors, Zee TV, SAB, Imagine TV, as well as Sahara One. This strategy brought about a gigantic shift in the content provided to the audiences. It didn’t take long for the other channels to take note and change tactics accordingly. The other channels too revamped their programming line-up. They made a conscious shift from the regular soap operas. They started dealing with shows which had more variety of topics.
They also began to broaden their target audiences and launch series more suited to a younger audience as opposed to the typical middle-aged person. It was in the year 2006, in the month of November that Star One, in collaboration with Star Gold, went ahead and launched its services in the UK. It did so on the Sky Digital network channel number 829. They later shifted this to the channel number 783. There were suggestions that Star One shall also make its services available on Freeview, Talk TV, Freesat, Smallworld Cable and Wight Cable.
