Plot
The film is about Riya, whose life is ruined when she loses her husband as well as her daughter in an accident. This destroys Riya from within, and she resorts to drastic measures to drown out her sorrow. Will she be able to limp back to normal life ever again?
Star Performances
Irrespective of the flaws, Masud Mawa should be appreciated for at least attempting to give the horror genre a unique touch. It was another matter that the film did not turn out as he would have wanted.
Analysis
In India, if you make a horror movie, you have limited options for the story. Either it would be something about a vengeful spirit or something about black magic. Things like psychological horror are not even thought of, let alone dedicating an entire film to it.
However, ‘Maya’ is different. In terms of the story, the film does pack a punch, even if just momentarily. The film focuses on a personal tragedy, and how it leads to events none would have anticipated.
For a moment, it looked like Telugu cinema had another innovative horror project in their hands after ‘Virupaksha’ and ‘Masooda’. However, the direction turned out to be a different case altogether. For all the vision of the screenplay, director Ramesh Nani turned out to be a classic amateur.
The film wasn’t very long. However, the okayish editing wasn’t matched by the visuals well enough. In some instances, the film looked as if two separate projects joined together by a superglue. Yes, we are not making this up, for there are many sequences that have zero relevance to the original narrative. If the makers were intending an anthology of stories, at least they could have given some kind of hint.
The actors looked okay. Nothing seemed out of the blue, or extraordinary in their performances. Ester Noronha tried her best to portray the emotional, as well as psychic angst of a devastated mother. Sadly, she couldn’t do enough to cover up the mess left behind by the makers.

Verdict
‘Maya’ could have been a stepping stone in terms of horror films. If executed right, this film would have been more than just a welcome surprise. However, despite the promising story, the execution of the screenplay has made this film a forgettable affair.      Â
