Young adults were particularly the targeted audience for this film as they can easily relate to the campus comedy. For a long time, such college comedy has not been seen in Tollywood, and that was the most significant advantage for this film to make a considerable profit. The trailer set high expectations, and the filmmakers were highly confident about the film’s content.

Plot

Manoj, Ashok, and Damodar are three engineering students who become close friends. Manoj has fallen for Shruti, another student on the same campus. Ashok, who pretends to be an orphan to avoid scrutiny, is in love with Jenny. And Damodar, who is very funny by nature and comes from a middle-class background, isn’t interested in relationships. But his life also changed when suddenly a random girl named Vennela started calling him daily. And the rest of the movie shows the college experiences of these three friends.

Star performance

Sangeeth Shobhan and Vishnu Oi have genuinely amazed the audience with their impeccable comedy timing. The film heavily relies on Sangeeth Shobhan’s comedic act; his live writing performance makes even the most straightforward jokes effective, and his expressions during the phone conversations are great. Ram Nithin is also looking fantastic and has an outstanding screen presence.

Analysis

College dramas are always refreshing to watch, and Mad will surely remind the audience of their college memories. The characters are relatable and unforgettable. This movie mainly focuses on providing non-stop humor, and at some part, it succeeds in doing so. A few scenes are superbly designed, and they will just touch the audience. MAD is one of the kinds of films that does not focus on telling a story, leaving a message, or giving emotional or logical moments. Its main mantra is comedy, and it became successful, even though some of the jokes are adult-oriented and not that good. Campus situations and other sequences are predictable, but still, they make you laugh like some mad. That’s why, even when things get silly, the film still entertains the audience. Certain scenes, such as male students wearing burqas and entering a girl’s hostel, look foolish, and such old-fashioned comedy should be avoided. The first half largely depends upon the typical hostel comedy. Till the interval whole plot of the movie is revealed and there is no suspense left in the movie. There are many pure madness and crowd-cheering moments as well in the film. MAD features weak love stories unfortunately, the love stories that build up till the interval fail to develop dramatically which ultimately leads to a predictable and humorous conclusion. The songs in the movie are not that much engaging and set the mood according to the scene.

Verdict

MAD delivers what it promises- entertainment. The film has a good number of fun sequences and many crowd-cheering scenes, situational comedy, and one-liner jokes work for the most part to the target audience which is youth and college students. With plenty of predictable moments, the film has a very thin storyline with songs that are not engaging and set the mood according to the story.
