If you want to know what exactly happens in a tech-savvy teen’s life and how things go bad, Unfriended is an 82 minutes long Skype call between six teenage friends.
Plot
The story kicks in with Blaire (Shelley Hennig) logs into her Skype accounts to have a casual chat with her five best friends. They are conversing either on video chat or text messaging. They’re having their fun when we learn that one of the friends, Laura Burns (Heather Sossaman) had committed suicide a year ago, when a video of her drunken, embarrassing went viral on the internet. On the other hand, Blaire starts a sexually charged video chat with her boyfriend Mitch (Moses Jacob Storm) where he's threatening her with a knife. The conversation is interrupted by a couple of their friends, and they move into a group chat, soon enough all they notice that Laura is online and they receive a message from her. Initially, they think that it's some kind of a prank and take it lightly. They soon realize it's something dangerous as they receive rather nasty and horrendous videos and audios.
Analysis
For all those who wonder what exactly goes on a teen’s computers, Unfriended is a mirror to that. They are self-absorbed snobs, taunting each other. Along the conversation, you get to know that everyone thinks ‘Laura had it coming.’ The movie looks like an 83-minute conversation between six teenage friends and later moves to five and so on because of some supernatural power. It’s a different concept of a cyber-ghost. The real horror settles in when there's a circle rotating due to the low internet, files getting downloaded and also when Blaire types in something, then deletes it then types in again, when the person is online yet isn't saying anything because they're watching the video or reading the text. Throughout the movie, as each of them dies, one thing is clear, cyberbullying is bad. You shouldn't target someone from behind the anonymity of a computer, because that stupid prank would have serious repercussions.
