Plot
The film follows the life, experiences, and acquaintances of renowned author J.R.R. Tolkien. Tolkien, played by Nicholas Hoult, and his brother were raised by their widowed mother and financially supported by Father Francis, played by Colm Meaney, their local priest. After their mother’s death, they were taken in by Father Francis and sent to a wealthy woman who was willing to support them. There Tolkien met Edith Bratt, played by Lily Collins. At school, Tolkien was praised for his talent in languages which made Robert Gilson, Patrick Gibson, his classmate jealous and they got into a fight. Robert’s father made Tolkien and Robert spend time together. During this, they become friends and Tolkien also befriends Robert’s friends Christopher Wiseman and Geoffrey Smith. The film follows how their friendship influenced Tolkien and subsequently inspired him to write The Hobbit.
Star Performance
Nicholas Hoult shines as Tolkien and perfectly captures his genius, his imagination, and his struggles in the war. Anthony Boyle, Patrick Gibson, Tom Glynn-Carney, and Lily Collins also perform well.
Analysis
The film succeeds in maintaining a balance between Tolkien’s happy moments and his moments of despair while he was lost in the war searching for his friends. The story and pace are also good.
