Scarface is a loose remake of the 1932 film by Howard Hawks which had the same title, it is almost like a homage to the original film, it tells the story of a fictional Cuban who comes to Florida in 1980 because of the Mariel Boatlift.
Tony becomes a gangster in the 1980s when there is a peak in the consumption and production of legal and illegal cocaine industries and other drugs, also called the cocaine boom. The film focuses on Tony as his rise to the top of Miami's criminal underworld and subsequent downfall in a very Greek tragedy fashion. The film is a homage to Howard Hawks and Ben Hecht, who were the writers of the original Scarface.
Star Performance
Al Pacino as Antonio “Tony” Montana has done a remarkable job playing his character and that certainly made this movie the icon of the Hollywood Industry, Al Pacino’s character Antonio inspired many characters to come in the future and even Hip-hop artists. Michelle Pfeiffer manages to charm the audience every time she comes up on the screen because of her everlasting beauty and her fierce performance.
Analysis
Scarface is a film that much more appeal to the audience that enjoys such a strong portrayal of a drug cartel which is responsible for the film's iconic status and popularity. The movie is remarkably set from the intro to the climax and the ending. The experimental and bold cinematography, by the amazing John A. Alonzo, gloriously magnifies Tony's life – all the mansion, the weapons, the lifestyle -- and then closes in as Tony's world begins to unfold.
