Saw X is a 2023 American horror movie directed by Kevin Greutert, produced by Twisted Pictures and released by Lionsgate. Nick Matthews heads cinematography while Charlie Clouser composes the music. It is a prequel to the movie Saw II and a sequel to the movie Saw. It stars Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith in lead roles.
Plot
After being conned by the medical industry that aims to take advantage of those who are most vulnerable, John Kramer, who discovers the chilling truth behind the risky medical operation he was to undergo to get rid of terminal cancer, vows to serve justice by subjecting the villains to his trademark methods of torture and punishment.
Star performance
Tobin Bell is flawless in his portrayal of the gruesome and frightening John Kramer on the warpath determined to get revenge. His on-screen chemistry with Shawnee Smith is, as always, unrivalled.
Analysis
Saw X might just be the greatest instalment in the bestselling horror franchise “Saw”. It’s gruesome, gory, terrifying and absolutely squeal-inducing in it’s wake. It is truly a beautiful addition to the series. Saw X serves as a prequel to the events of the original movie, giving us insight into the rich lore and backstory of our protagonist John Kramer. The best thing about this movie is that although it utilises gore and squeamish sequences just as much as the other movies in the series, it’s a lot more story-driven than them. It focuses on the incentives, motives and events that shape the events of the narrative that takes place in the later parts of the franchise. The thing about story-driven horror is that it blends depth and action perfectly and leaves a lasting, profound effect on it’s viewers. The presence of a story helps improve the one-dimensional, black-and-white stance that horror generally promotes.

Saw X is a top-notch addition as a prequel to the “Saw” franchise, and works even better as a standalone movie. It has a lot more depth and profound storytelling than most movies in the horror genre, but that works to it’s advantage. It does try to be slightly more emotion-centric than it is supposed to, considering that it should essentially be gory and gruesome throughout but that’s a minor flaw which can be overlooked. It’s a definite must-watch for all, whether you’re a fan of the franchise or not.
