Priceless is a French romantic comedy film inspired by the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It is produced by Philippe Martin under the banners Les Films Pelléas, France 2 Cinéma, France 3 Cinéma, Tovo Films, and KS2 Productions. The film stars Audrey Tautou Born on August 9, 1976, Audrey Justine Tautou is a >> Read More... (Irène), Gad Elmaleh (Jean), Marie-Christine Adam (Madeleine), Vernon Dobtcheff (Jacques), Jacques Spiesser (Gilles), and Annelise Hesme (Agnès). Gilles Henry did the camerawork and Isabelle Devinck did the editing. The film’s music is composed by Camille Bazbaz.

Plot

Irène, a beautiful gold digger first meets Jean, a timid waiter and bartender at a luxurious hotel and mistakes him for a young millionaire guest at the hotel, after her sugar daddy, Jacques falls asleep in their room after getting drunk. Jean, on the other hand, is instantly smitten by her, to the point that instead of telling her the truth, he plays along and acts as a millionaire in front of her. They get drunk and spend the night together in one of the hotel’s imperial suite. A year later, Irène returns to the hotel with Jacques, her elderly lover who proposes to her to get married. She is surprised to see Jean and later they spend the night together again. But this time, Jacques discovers the truth and calls off the engagement. With nowhere to go she returns to the imperial suite with her luggage and acts like she left Jacques for him. But after discovering Jean’s real identity, she walks away only to find a love-struck Jean following her and spending his entire fortune just to be with her. What will happen next? Will Irène fall in love with Jean? Or will she walk away, forgetting everything about him? The rest of the story deals with that.

Star Performance

Audrey Tautou did a splendid job as Irène. Gad Elmaleh accurately portrays Jean as a young, simple-minded man. They were well-supported by Marie-Christine Adam (Madeleine), Vernon Dobtcheff (Jacques), Jacques Spiesser (Gilles), and Annelise Hesme (Agnès).

Analysis

The star cast did justice to their roles. The background score was fantastic, and the cinematography was excellent. The director also did a fantastic job in giving direction and setting the flow for the plot. Priceless is charming and cute but has a bit of a bite to it. "Love conquers all" is certainly not an original theme, yet clichéd or not, this story feels both fresh and intelligent. Priceless manages to make the old seem new and it is buoyed by its charm, its nuanced writing and the performances of the two leads. There is something quite mature and yet naively innocent about this film, with characters who can do the most awful things but never enough to stop you from caring about them.

What’s There?

  • The star cast was terrific in their roles.
  • The background score was excellent.
  • The cinematography was fantastic.

What’s Not There?

  • A few minor flaws that could've been avoided.

Verdict

Priceless is not some iconic masterpiece with a meaning behind it, but it's definitely a very entertaining rom-com. Personally, I don't like the glorification of cheating. Still, in this film, I feel like it's kind of justified because none of the characters are angels and I don't have any sympathy for older men going after drastically younger women. Overall, it was a fun watch.
