Plot
Alan (Keean Johnson) and his younger brother find a bag of gold coins in a dead man’s home. They try to hide it from their friends, but one of them is suspicious and violent and would do anything to get that money.
Star performance
Keean Johnson and Alex Neustaedter look old for their respective roles but do their job convincingly. Every single actor has put forth a convincing performance. Shea Whigham as the local cop, Daniel Zolghadri is like a ticking time bomb. Jaeden Martell also holds the film well, not overpowering other supporting actors but eventually being the standout performer in the movie.
Analysis
The film resembles the cult classic “Stand By Me” The director has taken the approach of having strong characters. The cast has also fitted their roles perfectly. The film is quite interestingly shot, close up shots in a sudden manner, which gives an uneasy feeling. Jaeden Martell has this charm which elevates his performance and takes forward the film's story. His constant worry about coming up with something new is great. The film’s cinematography is dull which fits right with the film's mood. The film very well shows the relationship between poverty and crime. The film has a perfect runtime even though it does lose its pace and the narrative has a rushed ending, but being the debut film of Kevin McMullin and having so many plus points it deserves praise. It makes you look forward to what project he’s going to direct next. Low Tide is a decent crime thriller with good performances, especially by Jaden Martell.
