Love Is Blind (formerly titled Beautiful Darkness and look away) is an American independent dark comedy-drama film written by Jennifer Schuur and directed by Andy Delaney and Monty Whitebloom. It is the Whitebloom and Delaney's directorial debut. The movie originates from the companies, Locomotive and Regency Enterprises.

Plot

Initially called Look Away, it then went under the title, Beautiful Darkness before settling on the final title Love is Blind.

The movie is a funny and irresistible story of a young girl, Bess, who suffers from selective perception. She literally cannot see or hear her mother due to some past accident, even though she lives with her under the same roof. She gets a prescription from her psychiatrist to spend time with a suicidal man who later falls in love with her. But she cannot see him either. Where will their story lead? Will Bess be cured?

Star Performance

All the actors are on point, but the stand-outs are Shannon Tarbet as Bess, who can't see her mother, and Aidan Turner as the misunderstood and lonely Russell. Both bring convincing psychological realism to something that treads a fine line between realistic drama and magical realism and always manages to keep that delicate balance.

Analysis

A truly thought-provoking film. Despite the title, this is not merely a simple love story. It is delightfully quirky, but just as importantly, it has a wealth of emotional depth & gets you thinking & questioning your vision of life. The characters come alive & you find yourself invested in what happens to them. The camera work is captivating. The amount of mirror shots and tricks with reflections wears out its welcome before the halfway point. The location where the plot sets are fantastic. It feels like a dark fairy tale, with a secret hiding place in the woods shaped like an oversized bird's nest. You may not feel satisfied with the ending. Especially since a few problems remain unresolved, and we have questions that have to deal with going unanswered.

What’s There?

  • Thought-provoking storyline
  • Captivating camerawork
  • Beautiful location

 What's Not There?

  • Unsatisfied ending

Verdict

This romantic comedy is quite different from the rest. The story is different, and the performances are all spot on. It is sad, tender, moving, and thought-provoking. The cinematography & music is beautiful.
