Plot

Gretel wanted to work. So she went to an older man. But that older man was kind of pervert and creepy. So she refused to work with him. Gretel's mother scolds her. She tells her to leave the house with her younger brother, Hansel. Because their father is dead and his mother can not support them well. Gretel's mother threatened Gretel to live in this house, and if she did not do this, their mother might kill Gretel. Gretel takes her brother, Hansel, to the woods. In a small hut, they both take a rest. Gretel, and Hansel are very hungry and they eat some wild mushrooms. Hansel smells a cake which was coming from the hut. He went there. Through the window, Gretel sees that someone is taking Hansel to the hut. Holda comes from the hut bringing Hansel, and invites the sibling to dinner. Holda gives them a job and a place to live. But strange things happen to Gretel. She was getting a vision of a witch and some children calling her. When she followed the voices, she woke up. What will happen to Gretel and Hansel? What are the visions that Gretel was having? The rest of the story deals with it.

Star Performance

Sophia Lillis did an incredible performance in the film. Her journey to escape from the witch and save her brother was brilliant. Her detailing of the case was outstanding. Sam Leakey did a fantastic performance in the movie. He shows the nature of a young and innocent child who likes to explore the world. His innocence was factual and natural. One would hate Alice Krige after watching this movie. That much impact she made in the whole film. Her appearance as the witch was scary, horrifying, and, at the same time, creepy. Jessica De Gouw, and Charles Babalola did a remarkable performance in the film. All the other actors were as good as the main lead actors.

Analysis

The storyline of the film was great, creepy, horrifying and scary. The film focus on the central theme of give and take. The film is based on German folklore named as the title Gretel and Hansel by the Brothers Grimm. The horror nature of the film is maintained from the start till the end. Supernatural elements like the witch are shown in the movie. The adventurous journey of Gretel and Hansel demonstrated in the movie. The title of the film is Gretel and Hansel, but the film focuses more on Gretel and sometimes leaves Hansel. The background music and songs play a significant role in the movie. The dialogues were excellent.
