The story is another masterpiece of Eastwood’s must- watch performance. It became the first American film to feature Hmong Americans. The editing was done by Joel Cox and Gary D. Roach. The music was composed by Kyle Eastwood and Michael Stevens.

Plot

Eastwood plays the role of Walt Kowalski, who is a frustrated, racist man who got widowed during the Korean War. He also had a Labrador named Daisy. The death of his wife affected him a lot and left his life shattered and empty. Despite his all of his neighbors being Asian and Black families, he avoids everyone and stays alone in the company of home repairs and beer. There also lived a lot of gangsters in his society, and there came one day when the Asian gang clashed with the quiet teen boy, Thao Vang Lor, who lived right beside Walt’s house and forced the little guy into stealing Walt’s car. The gang then had to face Walt’s rifle and ran away. Later in the movie, we can see Walt finally realizing that the teen guy is no different from him, and so are the other ethnic neighbors. He then becomes the hero of the local neighborhood. Both Walt and Thao became pretty close, and he became his mentor and a father figure to Thao. The gangsters constantly harassed Thao and his sister Sue. Despite of Walt repeatedly warning them, they attacked Thao and Sue. Furious, Walt attacks them and gets them arrested but dies during the fight. The movie ends with Walt’s car being driven by Thao with Daisy sitting by his side.

Star performance

Eastwood, as usual, did a fantastic role as both Walt and the Director of the movie. The movie cannot be said as his best performance, but quite certainly it was a good one. The supporting cast portrayed their roles quite well and left a good impression on the audience. Although Eastwood’s role was quite evident in a few scenes, it is said to be his last role.

Analysis

The movie should get credits for talking about different races and showing representation when it almost gets left out in most of the films. It took a while for Walt to fit in with the neighborhood and understand them. The story wasn’t too exaggerated and delivered the message straight away. It gave the right message about tolerance, patience, and racism. Few of the scenes were quite harsh because of the language used and the violence, with shootings and beatings shown.

What’s There?

  • A different script
  • Representation of different races

What’s Not There?

  • A few minor flaws

Verdict

The survival thriller shown was neatly executed, and the message delivered was quite impactful and powerful.
