Plot
The film revolves around the life of Ruth (Mbatha-Raw), who has mystical, supernatural powers. The setting of the movie is the future, where rain is scarce and rare. Among the humans live a group of women - black women, who have the power to disintegrate and materialize items. Ruth discovers that she can cause earthquakes from her seizures and is soon on the run from authorities who want to experiment on her and study her powers. The situation leads her to her old farmhouse and family that she had run away from long ago. The rest of the film revolves around her attempt to mend her broken relationship with her mother and daughter and her attempt to control her powers and escape from the hands of the scientists.
Star Performance
Mbatha-Raw outshines every other cast member to produce a memorable performance that gives 100% justice to the character. Her performance drives the movie forward. Lorraine Toussaint also does a decent job with her character.
Analysis
The film breaks the usual cliche superhero plots and focuses more on the basic emotions and life of a person with supernatural powers. Again, instead of the typical good vs. bad guys, the director focuses on Ruth’s struggle to come to terms with her strength and her obstacles in controlling it. The film tries to explore the uncommon areas of a superhero story but fails to have a strong script supporting it. The core of the movie can be very well said to be Mbatha-Raw’s performance and exploration of black women superheroes. The CGI department has done splendid work considering the budget of the film. But apart from these, the film offers nothing more than hooks the audience to their seat. Even the moments between Ruth and Bo, and Ruth and Lila do not over a deep emotional connection that touches the audience. Unlike regular superhero movies, there is no villain character, apart from the scientist, who plays a mini-villain. The real villain here is Ruth’s powers which she cannot control. Overall, a solid attempt to reconstruct the superhero genre, but fails due to a weak script.

Verdict
The film runs strongly on the performance of Mbatha-Raw and other characters with the addition of a different approach to the superhero genre but fails to offer a vital pathway for the foundation. Towards the end, the movie becomes more of a drama rather than a superhero movie. With a more robust script, the film could have done wonders at the box office, especially since the exploration of the lives of black women superheroes could have opened a new pathway.
