Plot
The film is inspired by the novel Une Vie by Guy De Maupassant. The film revolves around an aristocratic family. It is centered on a woman named Jeanne and the struggles she faces as she begins her adult life as a woman in 19th century Normandy. In the film, Jeanne finishes her education in a convent and when she grows into an adult she falls in love with and marries Julien De Lamare, a local Viscount. However, Jeanne’s dream of a happy marriage is stripped away from her as her marriage turns sour when she finds out that her husband has been unfaithful to her. He has impregnated their maid and, after begging for forgiveness, even starts an affair with Judith’s best friend. We see how Jeanne navigates through life during a period when men dominate the world. Jeanne faces restrictions imposed by society, and we see her struggles as a mother with a fickle husband.
Star Performance
Judith Chemla has given a brilliant performance in her role as Jeanne.
Jeanne-Pierre Darroussin’s performance was also impressive.
Analysis
The film’s portrayal of how women survive in Normandy during the 19th century, when men dominated, is a bittersweet reminder of the past and has been depicted accurately. This film has many moments here and there that all women will be able to relate to and empathize with. The dialogues are impressive as they seem very spontaneous and natural. The performances by the leading cast members are flawless. The film is well-narrated and nicely edited. However, the entire atmosphere of the film is quite lifeless and depressing, and the main character lacks resilience.
