Nicholas Larrabure is the editor of the movie.

Plot

The film revolves around an experiment whereby four astronauts – Captain Theo Cooper, Dr. Emily McTier, Bug Kieslowski, and Cole Dvorak, were sent on a 400-day simulation to test the aftereffects of deep space travel. They were isolated in a bunker, and soon they started feeling its psychological effects like hallucination and paranoia. Their confusion deepens when a disheveled man finds his way into their simulated spaceship. They couldn’t determine whether the simulation had ended or not. Later, they returned to a post-apocalyptic Earth which further adds to their ambiguity. Who is the unknown person? Was it part of the simulation or not? The story answers these questions.

Star Performances

One remembers Brandon from the 2006 Superman movie. In this film, he showcased what he is capable of as an actor. He portrayed the team leader as authoritative and vulnerable at the same time. But what downgraded his efforts is the lack of character development. Caity, as Emily, did a fine work except sometimes, she overacted when her character was afraid and shocked. Ben Feldman’s performance made his character believable. His attention to detail while portraying Bug helped the audience connect with his character. Dane Cook’s portrayal was a bit unsatisfying. He fails to make the audience feel the gravitas of the situation. Despite the disjointed narration and lack of character development, the actors tried their best.

Analysis

‘400 Days’ is based on an intriguing plot where four astronauts were sent in a simulation for 400 days to read the psychological and emotional effects of prolonged isolation in space. But the film’s script fails to do justice to the plot. It flows in various directions at the same time and hardly provides viewers with the motivation of the characters. The confusing and laid-back writing adds to the shortcomings. The most dissatisfying part of the screenplay is the climax. It doesn’t provide a substantial closure to the story and leaves the audience with unanswered questions. The lack of chemistry between the characters is pretty evident. The lack of character development resulted in ambiguous performances in the film. The director’s vision felt unclear as the interaction between characters felt forced, and the thrill failed to immerse the audience for a longer duration. The creative cinematography successfully showcased the thriller element of the story. It successfully creates a claustrophobic environment within the bunker. Wojciech’s music enhances the film’s suspense. However, it feels repetitive and mismatched with the emotional beats. The editing felt inconsistent as the narrative lacked coherence and detracted. The poorly placed sequences and abrupt cuts make it difficult to create a suspenseful atmosphere. The lack of innovation and dynamic approach is the primary cause of this film’s failure in wooing the audience.

What’s There?

  • The film’s story is based on an intriguing premise.
  • The cinematography works for the film’s setting.
  • The background music creates a suspenseful atmosphere.

What’s Not There?

  • The screenplay is distracted from the main premise.
  • The film’s lack of character development is a significant flaw.
  • The film’s sloppy editing fails to make an impact.

Verdict

‘400 Days’ begins with a strong foundation and intriguing premise, but the incoherent narrative, mediocre performances, underdeveloped characters, and lack of innovation hinder it. While the film’s music and cinematography are acceptable, however, they were overshadowed by its flaws.
