Kalabhushana Ramya Wanigasekara was born on the 17th of July, 1936, in Kotiyakumbura, Sri Lanka. She works as an actress in Sri Lankan cinema, Television, and theatre. Along with being an actor, she is also a playback singer and a news reader. Ramya entered the world of drama as a playback singer with Chandi Gunathilake’s, Hewayo in 1974. After that, she became the background singer for most of Jayatissa Alahakoon’s plays. She debuted as an actor with Ranjith Dharmakeerthi’s Hasthiraja Mahaththaya in 1976, where she played a minor role. However, her breakthrough came with the 1978 play Mana Ranjana Weda Warjana, directed by Chula Kariyawasam. She played the role of Gunawathi.

was pregnant, so her part of Mathilda was given to Ramya. She played this role consecutively for 41 years. Her other plays include Idama, Doowili, Raja Kathawa, Ahasin Watunu Minissu, Sanda Kinduri, Ma Hene Reeri, Hiru Nathi Lowa, etc. Ramya joined Radio Ceylon to host the program, Thakshilawa in 1980. She also worked as a news anchor from 1981 till her retirement in 2006. She has acted in various critically acclaimed television serials, such as Kande Gedara, Palingu Menike, Denuwara Menuke, Koombiyo, Maruthaya, and the comedy sitcom Yes Boss.
Ramya has won several awards at local award festivals. To name a few, Popular Woman on Stage and Teledrama, Most Popular Actress, Best Supporting Actress, etc., in the 1990s. She won the Kalabhushana Award in 2010 for her contribution to drama. She also won the National Award in 2013 for her contribution to Television.
