Sinhala Actor Athula Liyanage

Athula Liyanage is a renowned Sinhala actor cum director cum writer. He was born on 1st March 1974 in Malabe, a suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has completed his higher education in sociology, mass communication, and fine arts at the University of Kelaniya. Before making his debut in the film industry, Athula was a profound stage play director and actor in his nation, and he has around 15 years of experience in stage plays. In 2000, at Srilanka’s most significant competition for stage dramas, the State Stage Drama Competition, he has conferred the best script writer award for his most famous drama, ‘Marana Warna’. At Srilanka’s National Youth Stage Drama Competition in the same year, he won many other awards like Best Director, Producer, Actor, Stage Set, Make-Up Artist, and Best Stage Light Arrangements.

Apart from this, at the same competition in 1997, he won Best Producer, Best-Supporting Actor, and Best Writer for his ‘Yuda Weddo’ stage drama and Best Producer award for ‘2100’ stage drama. He made his movie debut in 2004 with Gini Kirilli as the lead actor; in 2006, he acted in Berunda Pakshiya, directed by Sarath Dharmasiri. He was also part of the cast of a famous Sinhala TV series Anne, telecasted in 2007. He played the role of Amarapala in Walapatala a Sinhala drama film, released in 2008. He played the role of a wildlife officer in a Sinhala children’s movie, released in 2009. In 2010, he directed and co-produced the masterpiece of his career Bambara Walalla (The Whirlwind), a Sinhala drama thriller film.
