Ashok Kalra is an Indian artist working for the Punjabi and the Bollywood Film Industry. He was born in Civil Lines Ludhiana, Punjab. He went to KVM School to complete his primary education. To complete his college degree, he went to Arya College in Ludhiana. He had the desire to become an actor starting from school. He was in fifth class when he realized that he was more inclined towards acting rather than studying. His father was a businessman. During his initial career years, he was confused about his future life. He was confused about what to take as a profession from fields like his father's business, anchoring (where he was sent by one of his known relatives), and acting (in which he was interested). He joined Jalandhar Television, where he would read sports bulletin.

Side by side, he began doing modelling. He would probably get around 125 rupees for reading the sports bulletin at Doordarshan. It was only a Sunday-based programme. It was around 1980 when he began doing modelling, acting and work at Doordarshan. Coincidentally, he got offered the film because the cast was not complete, and the props that were required for the film were available at Doordarshan. So, Ashok was offered the role of villain and he got shifted to Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. From there, he started getting limelight and began doing regular film work. He got highlighted in the media because of the few known films like Suhaag Ka Balidaan (1987) and Ek Aur Khoon (1987).
