Biswajit Das was an Odia playwright, scriptwriter, film director and writer of short stories who lived from 18 August 1936 to 30 December 2004. Das, the oldest of four siblings, was born on August 18, 1936, in Jajpur, an Odisha subdivision part of Cuttack. Along with being a dramatist, Actor and liberation fighter, his father Subodh Das practiced homeopathy, and his mother Krushna Kamini Devi was also an activist. Das was significantly impacted by the traditional outdoor theatre performance known as “jatra” that he saw in his town he was in elementary school. After Ananta Mahapatra and Biswajit Das joined the group, it was planned to provide the audience something different beyond entertainment or recreation. The group brought the intellectual elite fresh perspectives and provocative questions, which enhanced the plays’ vibrancy and appeal. In 1958, Das began working for the government of Odisha as a public information officer in the department of information and public relations. Das worked as the public relations officer for four Odisha chief ministers, Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, Biju Patnaik, and Nandini Sathpathy. In 1994, he left for his position as Additional Department of Information and Public Relations. Das did not write much, but what little he did write is of exceptional quality. His personas have three dimensions. He infused his plays with reason and realism. In the 1970s, when professional Odia theatre was on the verge of closing and audiences has lost interest in absurdist drama, he managed to revive it in the halls somewhat.
In addition, Biswajit Das was a well-known film director. Among his well-known morion pictures are Maana Abhimaan (1980), Nijhum Ratir Sathi (1979), and Priyatama (1978). He also wrote the scripts for the following films: Gouri, Ahalya, Kaberi and Naga Phasa. For his contributions to Odia cinema, Das was honoured with the State Government award in 1987 and the Cine Critics award. Doordarshan serials were also written by Das.
