Byomkesh Tripathi was a celebrated actor, writer, and director of the Odia film industry. He was born on 19th January 1929 in the household of a renowned writer of the time, Sir Govind Tripathi. Creativity and expression were two traits that Byomkesh inherited from his father. Aspiring to become an actor in the 1930s had its challenges. It wasn’t easy for Byomkesh either. At an early age, Byomkesh understood his love for creative arts and became a part of the Uttarayani Club of Jatni in Puri. Established in 1920, the club continues to be a hub of emerging art forms and has witnessed the making of great plays and actors of the industry.
Byomkesh learnt acting initially from prominent theater personalities like Aswini Ghosh, Kartika Ghosh, and Balai Banerjee. It was after completing his graduation from the Calcutta University in 1958, that he enrolled in an institute for acting for the first time. He joined the Asian Theater Institute in Delhi where he learnt from some of the best instructors of the time. Having learnt some of the most remarkable techniques of stage play, Byomkesh was often able to surprise his audience with something artistic. After completing his graduation in 1958, Byomkesh also began writing stage plays. He focused on bringing forth the emotions and plight of people in the society. He highlighted issues of social importance like prostitution, injustices against women, and corruption. Besides scripting his plays and movies, he also translated the Greek plays- King Oedipus and Angigone, and a Sanskrit play- Mudra Rakhyasa in Odia. To celebrate the 50 years of Indian independence in 1997, Doordarshan had employed Byomkesh to make a documentary on the history of Odisha theater. However, Byomkesh passed away on 10th May 1997 at the age of 68 in Puri, Odisha, after giving his priceless contributions to the industry.
