Dipendra Lama is a Nepali Director, Writer, and Journalist. He was born on 29 July in Swoyambhu in Kathmandu to a Buddhist Tamang family. Although his father was originally from Solukhumbu, Dipendra Lama mostly grew up in Swoyambhu and later moved to Patan when he was 12 years old. Dipendra Lama spent his childhood with his mother and siblings as his father passed away at a young age, and as the eldest sibling, he became a guardian to his family. Dipendra Lama finished his schooling at Namuna Machchindra Madhyamik Viddhyalaya. He then studied Physics at Amrit Science Campus. At first, Dipendra Lama wanted to study engineering, but he had to give up on his dream because he did not have the required grades to pursue the subject. Instead, Dipendra Lama had to settle for a Bachelor's degree in Geology from TriChandra Multiple College.Â
Dipendra Lama started working as a tuition teacher while he was a student. He used to make 100 RUpees an hour by teaching Nepali to foreigners. In his free time, Dipendra Lama loved watching movies and reading film magazines. Through this hobby, he met Chetan Karki, whose interactions indirectly inspired him to consider writing about films. Dipendra Lama's first step in the industry came when Nepal Samachar Patra announced a competition where participants had to write an article about what the Nepali film industry needed to thrive. Dipendra Lama sent in his article and emerged victorious from the competition. As a reward, he received a three-month free subscription to the newspaper. Within the pages of this newspaper, a magazine called 'Kamana' caught Dipendra Lama's attention. It was during this time that he encountered Achyut Koirala, a journalist working for Kamana. Achyut saw potential in Lama's writing and encouraged him to submit his articles to Kamana.
While still in college, Dipendra Lama got an internship as an entertainment journalist with Naya Sadak Daily. His career as a film journalist spanned 18 years. During this time, Dipendra Lama worked for popular publications such as Nepal Samacharpatra, Spacetime, Nepal Weekly Magazine, Naya Patrika National, and Nagarik dailies. In 2016, the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) awarded him with the 'Fine Art Journalism Award'. Through these connections, he became aware of the different film festivals hosted in Nepal. Inspired by the art of filmmaking, he began to write movie reviews and soon became known as a critic who was not afraid to say the things that had to be said.Â
The first movie Dipendra Lama wrote and directed was 'Ghampani' which came out on 14 April 2017. The event also marked the end of his career in journalism.
