Nanda is a famous yesteryear actress, who had worked in Hindi and Marathi movies. She gave good performances in Joru Ka Ghulam, Ittefaq, Neend Hamere Khwab Tumbare, Pati Patni and Kanoon etc. Nanda was born (8 January 1939) to a film-based family; her father, Vinayak Damodar Karnataki, was a renowned Marathi actor-director-producer. Her mother, Meenaxi, was also an actress. Since the death of her father at her very early age, Nanda’s childhood was spent in difficult times. Thus, she debuted as a child star, financially assisting her family. The film Mandir was her debut film. Initially called as Baby Nanda, Nanda took up coaching for studies at home. She took a career in movies and aided her family. Her major break came with the film Toofan Aur Diya which was directed by her uncle V Shantaram. The film dealt with brother-sister love. Though she received a nomination in Filmfare for Best Actress, she didn’t win it. She also played supporting and second leads in her career. The 1959 film Chhoti Bahen had Nanda, playing the title role. The film was a commercial success, and a star was born. Later, she acted in Hum Dono, opposite Dev Anand. She was one of the leading ladies in the film. The film Aanchal fetched Nanda the Best Supporting Actress Award. She worked in the film Aashiq with Raj Kapoor, and acted in over 3 films with Rajendra Kumar. Nanda had confessed once that, most of her outstanding performances were in movies that failed to create ripples in box office. During the years 1966-69 she was the highest paid Bollywood actress, only next to Nutan. Nanda had the reputation of motivating newcomers. She worked with Shashi Kapoor in 8 films when he was not so successful. Six of their films worked at the box office. The 1965 film Gumnaam was instrumental in making her one of the top actresses. Her film Ittefaq with Rajesh Khanna was a commercial success and Nanda was nominated by Filmfare for Best Actress. Her offers dwindled from 1973 as her acting with younger artists did not fetch rewards. The year 1982 saw her working in three films, which were all successful. Nanda was given respect for her acting prowess, versatility and a prolonged career. Nanda always maintained good rapport with another actress Waheeda Rahman. It was during the end of her profession that she tasted super hits, including The Train, Ittefaq and Joru Ka Ghulam. Nanda knows many languages like Marathi, English and Hindi. Nanda is quite an outgoing person.
