Five Million Money Drop is an internationally acclaimed and famous game show that was adapted from the famous Western show of the UK named “The Million Pound Drop”. The format of the show was unique, nail-biting and interesting and soon went popular among the viewers. This popularity led to its adaptation in various countries worldwide. The United States also adapted this show with the name of “Million Dollar Money Drop” that was initially aired on Fox TV. It is now aired in more than 50 countries all over the world due to its rising popularity. Each country slightly altered the format to match the taste and culture of its audience. The Sri Lankan version is known as the Five Million Money Drop. This was originally aired on Sirasa TV for the Sri Lankan population. The show is in Sinhala. Till now, three seasons have been released because of the continuous support and love it has received from the audience. This show was a huge success in Sri Lanka. The first episode of the first season was released on 13th August 2022. It was wrapped up on 5th February 2023. The second season was released on 2nd September 2023. The third season came out recently on 4th January 2025. This proved the legacy of this show. The format of the show is quiz-based. It is a risky and tricky mind game that tests the intellect as well as the decision making skills, logical reasoning, and decision making ability of the participant. The bundle of real money is placed in front of the players to increase the tension in the show. They will be provided with seven multiple-choice questions. These are normal general knowledge-based or current affairs questions. The options in the questions will decrease in number to increase the difficulty level of the game. The first three questions have four options each. The next three questions have three options each. The final and seventh question has only two options. The players will participate in pairs. According to the rules, the participants should have a preexisting relationship between them, like that of siblings, spouse, friends, relative, colleague, or any other relationship. Contestants will place money on trapdoors corresponding to their answers that they think are correct. Each option has a different trap door or drop chute. Only one of the options is correct. Any amount that the participants place on an incorrect option is lost. This happens when the trap door opens leading to loss of money. This money drops down through a chute and is no longer part of the game. This amount is permanently removed from the game. This adds to the suspense and anxiety of this game. This keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats. The money that is placed on the correct answer doesn't fall. This amount can be used in the upcoming questions. A fixed amount of time is provided to the players per question. They have to make quick decisions under this much pressure. After the time runs out, the bundles that are not placed on any option or trapdoor are also lost permanently. A strategic challenge is also given to the players. It is mandatory to leave at least one trap door with no money. Participants have a fixed amount of time to place their money on the trapdoors. Five million Sri Lankan rupees was the prize money of this show given to the participants at the start of the game. It was distributed in 50 bundles of 100,000 rupees each in the form of 5000-rupee notes. This was done to make the bundle appear thick and visually appealing to the viewers. This game continues till the participants are out of money or they reach the final question. If they answer all seven questions correctly, the remaining amount of money is theirs. They can take it home with whatever money they have remaining with them. Only one lifeline is given to the contestants per game. It's known as the “Quick Change” lifeline. This lifeline allows Reallocation of funds to the contestants if they use this one-time lifeline. If they use this lifeline, they are given an extra 30 seconds to change their money distribution quickly. If the team doesn't place the money before the time runs out, this lifeline is automatically applied. If used wisely, this can help participants save their money. If they have already used this lifeline and still couldn't distribute money before time runs out, the team would be disqualified immediately from the game. The time limit for the first three questions is 60 seconds each. The time limit for the next two questions is 75 seconds each. The time limit for the 6th question is 90 seconds. The time limit for the final and seventh question is 60 seconds. Kanchani Pallepitiya was the Executive Producer of this show. Because of her leadership and vision, the show became a huge success.
