Lyari Notes a documentary film which is shot over for two years. The two filmmakers Maheen (Pakistan) and Miriam (India) come together to show the power of music.Lyari Notes was selected for IDF Academy among the 16 projects for its Summer school 2013.
Plot Lyari Notes a movie about four girls and how a Pakistani musician tries to teach these four girls to express themselves through music in Lyari, the most volatile district of Karachi, Pakistan. The movie opens on a Saturday night in Karachi. There we see that there is a school known as Music Art and Dance (MAD). There is a man Hamza Jafri, who is a music teacher at the school and the co-founder of MAD. He is sitting there and is playing his guitar. He is trying to raise funds for girls so that he could provide them with music education. The film shows that since 2007 many schools were burnt down and thus it takes a lot of time for Hamza to convince the parents of these girls to send them for music education. When the girls join the school, they are fascinated by seeing the musical instruments. The movie tries to exhibit the struggle of these four girls which strive to reach for their classes at MAD school despite all the curfews and crossfires. The film shows the journey of these girls and how they transform themselves and try to learn music to express themselves. Lyari Notes unveil the life of these four girls over a period of 3 years.
Analysis Chandy came up with the idea of making a documentary movie on music after listening to the young and underground musicians of Pakistan. Thus he thought music can be a good theme for a film. Zia joined the film as Chandy wanted an insider’s perspective and she wanted the film to be real and appeal to the audience, and thus Zia was appropriate for the work. Though both of them faced several issues and the film was shot both in India and Pakistan and as the two countries, not on friendly terms, they had to face several funding problems. Thus Lyari Notes is a movie about melting boundaries between the two nations.
Star Performances Lyari Notes show the performances of Hamza Jafri and the four girls. The film shows the lives of Hamza Jafri and the four girls and how his students improved over the period. It shows how music becomes the voice of these girls for expression and escape in such trivial times.
