Plot

The Inspection is a film that revolves around the life of a homosexual black man, Ellis French. Ellis is depicted as a drug addict whose life is completely in shambles and he is homeless. He decides to change the course of his journey and aims at getting clean and joining the Marines. He stops to inform his mother, Inez, about his aspirations. Inez also suspects his sexuality. Inez makes it her life mission to remove the “gayness” of her son. Ellis leaves for the Marine Camp.

He easily passes the initial rounds and now Ellis is in an army training camp with other candidates. Some practices followed by Ellis reveal his true self. Many of the people present in the camp lash out at him, especially instructor Leeland Laws and a candidate, Laurence Harvey. The movie then follows Ellis’s journey as he navigates his way through hardships and eventually finds some friends too.

Will Elvis ever get truly accepted by those around him?

Watch this thriller to find out.

Star Performances

The Inspection is a movie that takes on many societal issues through the lead character portrayed by Jeremy Pope. Jeremy’s depiction of a gay and determined black man is no short of perfection. It is also refreshing to watch Gabrielle Union playing the role of Ellis’s mother. It is a new challenge for her, portraying an older woman, but she does the job flawlessly.

Analysis

The Inspection is a movie that takes on many societal causes such as racism and homophobia and tries to educate the audience on it. We are shown the plight of homosexuals, especially in the Marines. The attempt to bring this issue to light is commendable and the storyline too is crafted to perfection. The casting of the lead characters is appropriate and the roles seem tailor-made for them. Although this movie is now being deemed as a masterpiece, a few areas could have been worked upon.

Firstly, the portrayal of Marines is wrong and tarnishes their reputation. The candidates being portrayed as lazy, immoral, and unethical creatures is something that is not a true depiction at all. Also, some scenes could have been avoided as they make the audience uncomfortable and roll their eyes at the movie. To sum it up, the flaws and merits balance each other to create a satisfactory cinematic experience for the viewers.

What’s There?

• Attempts to give insight on hardships faced by homosexuals.

• The story is inspired by real-life events, which helps in connecting the movie to the audience.

What’s not There?

• Some scenes make the viewers uncomfortable.

• Inaccurate portrayal of Marines is seen on screen.

Verdict

The Inspection is a movie that educates the audience about the plight of homosexuals. It is an accurate depiction and is inspired by a real-life story. This film is highly recommended and can be watched at least once. It has the potential to serve as an eye-opener for the audience.
