Analysis
The Belko Experiment is a black comedy with a thrilling premise that had the potential to be way more than what it is. Eighty employees at a corporate office are suddenly trapped in this Battle- Royalesque experiment where they are given an ultimatum: kill or be killed. It’s a dark film chock full of gore and a plot that is seemingly more serious than what it pans out to be. The movie could have fared better with the inclusion of developed, well-thought out characters rather than the one-dimensional ones that we see throughout the movie. There are no motives, no hidden incentives or backstories: just a bunch of people in an office setting that are suddenly ordered by this mysterious “working in the shadows” voice to kill each other to survive, and they start doing exactly that. Some characters, however, are more developed than the others: several of them team up and stick to each other, rebelling against this inhumane predicament in contrast to others who decide to stick to the survival of the fittest ideology. The Belko Experiment is a movie that isn’t bad but it isn’t shockingly good either; you’re disappointed it isn’t more than what it is because it could have been so much more.
