Plot
Following the tragic demise of his pregnant wife, ex-cop Luke Wright is living a life in seclusion. He crosses paths with Mei, a young Chinese prodigy, who is on the run, pursued by both the Chinese mafia and the Russian mafia. However, neither the corrupt cops nor the mafia knows to what extent can Luke go to protect the young child, now his only hope for redemption.
Star Performances
Jason Statham lives up to his reputation as usual. However, for a change, he also shows his vulnerable side, and his bonding with the young Catherine Chan is something worth watching.
The direction and writing of Boaz Yakin are also a bonus.
Analysis
Imagine ‘The Transporter’ meeting ‘Leon: The Professional.’ That is precisely ‘Safe’ in a nutshell. It is your regular Jason Statham action flick. The only difference is that ‘Safe’ lives up to its name, and is more realistic than most of the action dramas that Jason previously starred in.
Boaz Yakin takes a rather predictable plot, only to give it a new treatment. This time, Jason Statham is not just facing a random cartel, but an organized mafia from both China and Russia at the same time. The political undertones are hard to miss. Â
The action in this film is slick, fast-paced, and hard-hitting. Anyone fond of Jason Statham and his choice of films will surely not be disappointed at all. However, for a change, there is some realism in the script. The hero is not a one-man army by default. He is vulnerable, he resorts to alcohol to drown his sorrows. Yet, when the time comes, he can be the worst nightmare for even the coldest of criminals. Also, Catherine Chan as the young prodigy in distress excels in whatever time she is allotted on screen.
The execution might look vague and choppy in some places. However, they are not that significant to ruin the overall experience. Be it the lead pair, or the supporting cast, all do justice to their respective roles.

Verdict
‘Safe’ on the surface may look like another run-of-the-mill action flick. However, the direction, as well as the performances of Jason Statham and Catherine Chan make it look realistic, as well as convincing. If you’re a fan of Jason Statham and his action flicks, you will be more than satisfied.
