Plot

Autumn Callahan, a 17-year-old, suspects she is pregnant, and when she visits a maternity clinic, her suspicions are verified. She decides to relocate because she cannot obtain an abortion in Pennsylvania without parental consent. So, she and her cousin Skylar embark on a journey of friendship, fortitude, and compassion across the state lines of New York City. Their survival in the new city fighting the various aspects of society forms the rest of the film.

Star Performance

The film is a pure Drama film that demands powerful performances to convey emotions. Sidney Flanigan as Autumn is perfect in all senses showing her vulnerability as a young pregnant girl to her strong self after moving to a new city. Her performance elevates the film by many folds. Talia Ryder also nails it as Autumn’s cousin providing a perfect support system role. The rest of the cast also looked convincing and surely acting is one of the strong elements of the film.

Analysis

Although the movie is a work of fiction, backed by thorough factual research it brings out several aspects of the untold journeys that women take. The movie takes on a route with a strong depiction of a young woman going through a difficult phase in life and the range of emotions brought up by all actors to showcase this is mindblowing. The environment is set up to convey this, with a non-supporting healthcare system, people’s outlook towards you, and various parts that appeal to you. Even the music of the film captures the emotions well and will binge you throughout the movie. Even the camera work suits the film showcasing actors’ emotions and parallelly the changing landscapes well. Lastly, the scene with the counselor from where the title of the movie is derived, speaks a lot of emotions just with its pauses as it surely portrays the story of many women through it.

What’s there?

  • Great acting by all the actors
  • Powerful and soothing music
  • Excellent camera work

What’s not there?

  • A little lengthy film

Verdict

The movie is a very robust and thought-provoking movie that discovers the often overlooked sections of society and is surely worth a watch.
