MORE CAST & CREW
Seen in Hellions are some familiar faces: Chloe Rose, Rachel Wilson, Robert Patrick, and Rossif Sutherland. The movie was directed by a very familiar Bruce McDonald.
Plot: The worst thing that can happen when you're expecting is costumed kids from hell knocking at your door on Halloween. Of course, this shouldn't be scary; they only want candy. But what if they don't want candy, but instead are after your unborn child? This is just what happens to a moody high school teenager Dora (Chloe Rose), who finds out on Halloween night that she's pregnant and has decided not to tell her boyfriend Jace (Luke Bilyk) or her mother (Rachel Wilson) just yet.
A group of young, creepy trick-or-treaters is outside destroying her house. They want only one thing, and that's the only thing Dora will not part with it- her child. What follows isn't typical Hollywood horror, but a surreal psychedelic experience - as is Bruce McDonald's style. The viewer is often taken into a journey inside Dora's head, showing her powerlessness. To see if and how Dora overpowers these monsters who keep saying "Blood for baby," you'll have to watch Hellions.
Analysis: The trailer definitely looks very promising, but the movie does not do it justice. A lot of scenes come in and go off, with no real end or continuity. The movie has no real outline or "rules for the ghosts", and expects the viewer to understand everything that's going on without explanation. A lot of characters are underdeveloped and simply thrown in together. When it comes to the horror aspect of it, the noises are well-timed, but the color flashes are random and too many, hardly contributing to increasing the terror factor.
Star performances: Chloe Rose (and the masked children, of course) are the focus of most of the movie. She does her job pretty well, and exceptionally well at the start. She keeps us connected to the story, and keeps us curious throughout as to what she's going to do next. She shows great charismatic acting. Robert Patrick, who plays the town cop, and Rossif Sutherland, who plays Dora's gynecologist, show good skills too but are limited by their characters.
Bruce McDonald has done a great job with direction, despite the terrible script. His style in Hellions is very similar to that seen in Pontypool. Norayr Kasper, as the cinematographer, has done an excellent job with the camera. Pascal Trottier is the person responsible for the confusing screenplay.
What's there?
1. The cinematography is amazing. The use of camera angles and effects is commendable, and the overall imagery is great.
2. It has a really great trailer; bound to make you curious.
3. The spooky noises work well with the movie and enhance the horror factor.
What's not there?
1. Sadly, there's no real plot. The whole movie is confusing; you simply don't get what they're trying to express.
2. It has a selective kind of horror - one not everybody could find scary.
Verdict: Go for this only if you're really bored and have absolutely nothing to do, and can sit through eighty minutes of horrifying chaos. Don't forget to get lots of popcorn to get through it.
