A Date with Miss Fortune is a romantic comedy directed by John L'Ecuyer, featuring Jeannette Sousa and Ryan Scott in the lead roles. The film explores the dynamics of a cross-cultural romance between a superstitious Portuguese-Canadian woman and a struggling writer.

Plot

The movie portrays the life of Jack, a writer with low income and no job who happens to cross path with Maria, a Portuguese Canadian woman about not stepping on lines. In turn, the main characters, belonging to different cultures, immediately lose their heads over each other. The different stages of their relationship make them get into various funny and romantic situations due to their differences in status, employment, and faith. Another complication is that Maria’s family holds rather conservative attitudes and Jack is still indecisive about his occupation. Thus, humor and dramatic bouts of the movie stem from cultural discrepancy, and the attempts of the couple to seize and interpret it.

Star Performance

Jeannette Sousa and Ryan Scott show the audiences great performances, make the show believable and give it a pleasing spin. They do a preety good job of creating the screen chemistry and not forcing it all the time and seem adorable. Other characters like Joaquim de Almeida and Vik Sahay add depth to the visuals of comedy as well as, the drama on the large screen.

Analysis

Miss Fortune remains famous due to the show’s ability to incorporate comedy and the realistic love story of a couple. In the area of the script the best achievements were made in the creation of the witty script by Sousa and Scott that perfectly reflects the main aspects of the cross-cultural relation. Comedy is managed well by director John L’Ecuyer while at the same time he makes the attempt at romance convincing thus making it a fun movie to watch. This makes it even more valuable than a simple romantic comedy as there are elements of culture and interpersonal relations within the families that are presented in the episodes. While there are some scenes that are quite clichéd, the splendid performances and a certain kind of endearing quality makes the movie worth watching.

What's There?

  • Launched out by the lead actors of the film
  • A true-to-life representation of how such matters occur between two different cultures
  • They have done a splendid job in writing the script and the humor is well incorporated.
  • Strong supporting cast
  • A good portion of directorial work with elements of comedies and romantic movies.

What's Not There?

  • A few other things are instinctively predictable
  • Occasional pacing issues

Verdict

A Date with Miss Fortune is one of the new romantic comedies that will add a new perspective to interethnic marriages. It has the comedy, talented actors and some of the tender scenes that are typical for this genre so it is definitely for fans.
