Rohan Weerasinghe is a Sri Lankan musician, composer, and singer. He was born on February 18, 1949, in Algiriya Matara, in southern Sri Lanka. Weerasinghe started schooling at the Good Shephard Family Convent in Nuwara Eliya in 1954, and later moved to Vidyachakra Buddhist School in Ruwan Eliya, Welimada Maha Vidyalaya, Pannipitya Dharmpala Vidyalaya, and Gamini Maha Vidyalaya, Nuwara Eliya.
Weerasinghe learned the basics of music from K.V.S. Perera Kithsiri Aluthge. He entered the Government Music School of Sri Lanka for further studies in Oriental music by mastering Sitar. Weerasinghe became a key Sitar player for music concerts of prominent singers in Sri Lanka, such as Victor Ratnayake's Sa, Nanda Malini's Shrawana Aradhana, and Sanath Nandasiri's Swarna Kundala. Weeransinghe taught music at D.S. Senanayake College, Senananda Maha Vidyalaya Meepilimanna, and Anands Sastralaya, Kotte, as a government teacher. In 1982, he joined ‘Sing Lanka’ Studios as a sound engineer. At that time, he composed T.M. Jayaratne's Ekasitha Dethanaka and Hiruta Horen and Neela Wickramasinghe's Punchi Sithe Punchi Sina, which became popular songs in Sri Lanka. So far, he has created melodies for over 8000 songs, which include films, stage plays and teledramas.
Weeransinghe has won many awards as a music director for songs like Aaradhana, Saharave Sihinaya, Saptha Kanya, Aadara Hasuna, Seilama, Veesidela, Madara Parasathu, Me Mage Sandai, Anjalika, Rekha, Sudu Saha Kalu, Sankranthi Samaya, Thala Mala Pipila, Dunhinda Addara, Vilambeetha, Gajaman Nona, Rala Bindena Thena, and Maghatha. He has also received awards for the most popular songs for Sandapanak se Awidin and Ranmalak Lesa. Weerasinghe performed his sing Ransara Dahara at the Arts Centre Melbourne in 2004 and at the Sydney Opera House in 2006. He has been the advisor to the President of Sri Lanka in Cultural and Aesthetics since 2006.
