Her career started as a child television presenter and later accelerated as an actress in Sri Lankan television serials such as Sanda Pini Wassa, Sujatha, and Sihini. Belonging to a family with a musical background, she had an inclination towards music from a young age. Although she didn't participate in any drama or music activities during school, she studied music as a subject up to her A/L examinations. Her father and grandmother were also talented singers.

Shehani's journey in the entertainment industry started in 2013 when she became a freelance television presenter for TV Derana, hosting the children's program Trim Trim. It was also during this time that she was casted in the music video for the song Oba Ma Hamuwuna Da by Sashika Nisansala, which gained her popularity among the public. She continued to appear in various music videos in the following years. In 2013, she entered the television industry with the serial Acid directed by Chamara Janaraj Peiris, playing the role of Senuri. Her breakthrough role came in 2015 when she was invited to portray the title role in the television serial Sujatha, replacing Nehara Peiris.

Her portrayal of Sujatha garnered immense popularity and became a major milestone in her acting career. Shehani has appeared in several other television serials, including Warna, Sanda Pini Wassa, and Mal Hathai, where she played the role of Madhavee and Ashawari, respectively.
